After an accident

1. Stop safely, switch off the engine and turn on hazard lights.
2. Check yourself and others for injury. Do not move a seriously injured person unless there is immediate danger.
3. Call emergency services when anyone is injured, the road is blocked or there is serious danger.
4. Place a warning triangle only when it is safe to do so.
5. Exchange names, phone numbers, registration and insurance details.
6. Photograph the vehicles, road position, damage, signs and surroundings.
7. Do not admit fault at the scene. Give factual information only.

Vehicle breakdown

1. Move off the carriageway where possible and stop in the safest available place.
2. Switch on hazard lights and apply the parking brake.
3. On a motorway, leave through the side away from traffic when safe and wait behind a barrier.
4. Keep passengers away from moving traffic.
5. Call roadside assistance or a trusted mechanic and share your exact location.
6. Never attempt repairs in a live traffic lane.
